Engineering Team

Do you want to help us connect the world?

You'd be joining a great team

Our self-directed team has created an environment where we solve problems with equal parts creativity, know-how, curiosity, and jokes. Actually, we're heavy on the jokes.

We use many technologies in pursuit of our mission. Behind the HTML5 and Javascript, we make heavy use of Python, AMQP, PostgreSQL, Redis, Xapian and a great many open source libraries and tools. We love open source and our names are in the contributors lists of many of the projects we depend on.

We currently have openings for:

  • Web Developers
  • Front-End Engineers
  • Back-End Engineers
  • Site Reliability Engineers

Here's who you'd be joining:

...and working in a great office

Our office in Old Town in downtown Portland, Oregon is designed for agile, collaborative software development. Work at your mobile sit/stand desk, or wheel it across the room to pair with a colleague. Or move into one of our dedicated pairing rooms featuring glass whiteboard walls.

Feeling loungy? Hack on one of our many beanbags. Projector and couch spaces abound for group work. Or take the conversation outside onto the roof deck. Refuel with snacks and (real) espresso.

Our office is convenient to the city's transit center and one block from the MAX. We love bike commuting and have secure, in-building bicycle parking and showers.

...with an awesome organization

At Idealist, we live our values of generosity and mutual respect. We invest in our staff, and we believe in things like listening to each other, teamwork, and autonomy. Most importantly, we believe in being passionate about what we do both at work and outside of work.

Our benefits package reflects our values. It includes 20 paid vacation days in the first year, 10 paid holidays, 401K matched retirement plan, and health, dental, vision, and disability insurance. Here's a more comprehensive list of benefits.

Who we're looking for

We're a mission-driven bunch, so you should be motivated by the idea of using technology for good. We're looking for self-motivated team players with strong work and play ethics.

Interested in working with us?

All engineering positions are on-site in our Portland office during regular business hours.

Drop us a line at engineering-jobs@idealist.org and let us know why you'd like to join us in our mission and how you would like to help. Include your github or Bitbucket page if you like—we'd love to see your work.
