This Public Relations Associate will assist the President/CEO of the Urban League of Essex County in managing the public image of the Urban League of Essex County ("The Agency") and secondarily, in Northern New Jersey, investigate the various funding sources available. The ideal candidate will be a graduate student with public relations experience, and preferably, a keen understanding of managing the flow of information from The Agency to potential funders, civic leaders, and the press (including print and broadcast media) and other entities capable of helping The Agency further its agenda.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Work closely with the President of The Agency to increase the visibility of the President and The Agency:
Public Relations
•Study the objectives, promotional policies and needs of The Agency - to develop public relation strategies to positively influence the public's opinion of The Agency. Policy will be developed in conjunction with the President of the Urban League of Essex County. Gather good ideas by conferring with certain staff members and Board members of The Agency.
•Prepare and edit organizational publications for external audiences, including potential funders, civic leaders and members of print and broadcast journalism
•Respond to requests for information from the media
•Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with representatives of community, consumer, employee, and public interest groups
•Arrange public appearances for The Agency President in forums that provide exposure for The Agency and the President
Skills Required
•Excellent verbal and written communication skills
•Great organizational skills; strong detail orientation
•The ability to simultaneously handle multiple projects
•Familiarity with computer software, specifically Microsoft Word, Microsoft Power Point and Microsoft Excel
•Working knowledge of how to effectively use of social media for message positioning
•The ability to remain calm and focused under pressure
•Be a self-starter
Education and Experience
•Preferably a graduate school student or an undergraduate college student with at least 2 years of prior Public Relations experience, and previous experience working with non-profit organizations in the area of Public Relations and, secondarily, Fundraising/Fund Development.
