Project Manager in Sustainable Development

ConservEN (Conserve Natural India) is a North Indian non-governmental program, part of the NGO EduCare India. We are a multi-national group of interns, fellows and staff working together with local communities (Gaddi, Punjabi, Migrant Workers, Rajasthani, etc.) towards the never-ending goal of sustainable development and natural resource conservation. Our current efforts are focused on: waste management and composting toilets, organic farming, microfinance projects promoting the re-use and recycling of trash and construction waste for resale, organic and bio-friendly household product production and sale, reforestation and sustainable bamboo plantations, eco and rural tourism and eco and green construction practices.

The International Internship Program of ConservEN India is designed to provide selected applicants with rewarding educational and learning experiences, as well as opportunities to contribute in one of several critical work areas in various developmental projects in North India.

As a Sustainability Project Manager, you are responsible for one environmental project in a particular cluster (this may be one project located in several centres).The work we do:

  • sustainable natural resource management (watershed protection, wastewater management,soil conservation etc),
  • organic farming,
  • wildlife conservation (currently focusing on diminishing populations of iguana and tortoise in the Punjab state),
  • safe waste management practices and improved work conditions for migrant trash pickers,
  • cultural and rural tourism,
  • reforestation and bamboo plantations, and
  • commercial and artistic recycling of plastic/metal/wooden trash and construction waste, and the development of bio-friendly household products for distribution and sale for the benefit of community development.

Project Manager

Reports to: Program Coordinator

Responsible for: Project Assistant Manager/s

Timeframe: 6-12 months

  • Age Restriction: 18 to 35 years of age

The Project Manager's role is to innovate and manage one or more projects within the areas listed above, with the support of Project Assistant Managers, at a specified cluster location within one of the three EduCARE India centres: Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Rajasthan. They work closely with the Program Coordinator to implement on-ground projects and manage them daily, monitor and evaluate these projects and their resource needs on a weekly and monthly basis, and update the project manuals, with the assistance of the Project Assistant Manager. Additionally, the Project Manager should reach out to their community and create/maintain communication and collaboration with the local people for their education and empowerment.

Tasks and responsibilities:

Project Management:

  • Research and initiate new projects
  • Manage existing projects within the assigned program cluster
  • Monitor, evaluate and report on the project activities to the Program Coordinator
  • Liaise with the Program Coordinator to acquire material and non material resources
  • Create and update project manuals regularly
  • Create long term, medium term and short term plans with the support of the Program Coordinator
  • Organize and chair the project committee meetings
  • Coordinate and support Cluster Coordinator in cluster events

Communications:

  • Liaise between Project Assistant Managers and Program Coordinators
  • Help manage the feedback, concerns, and needs of the Project Assistant Managers within their projects.
  • Create blog posts related to their projects regularly.Benefits and Application

Free on-site accommodation is provided. Free access to Internet is provided in the various centers and some houses. Additionally, work-related transportation and phone expenses (partially) are provided for by the organisation.

*Fee: Please note that in order to cover legal costs, there is a one-time internship placement fee of US $460. For long term interns this fee is partially to fully reimbursed! (6 to 12 months)
