Job Summary: The Classroom Intern is responsible for assisting the Classroom Supervisor in leading an afterschool class of approximately 14 refugee youth, supervising volunteers, delivering lessons, and conducting extra-curricular activities.
General Responsibilities:
- Help supervise afterschool classroom, both students and volunteers
- Assist in implementing classroom lessons and extra-curricular activities provided by coordinators
- Ensure safety of the students at all times, managing both student behavior and collectively, safety of the youth center. Tutor refugee youth (grades 1-8) in all academic subjects, specifically focusing on literacy skills, self-sufficiency, creativity, and academic progress
- Integrate youth program volunteers into afterschool activities, supervising and utilizing their presence effectively to best meet the needs of the student, classroom, and teacher (e.g. homework help, lesson implementation)
- Maintain organization and cleanliness of one's classroom, and overall, collectively helping to keep the youth center organized, clean, and safe.
- Provide classroom supervisor with frequent updates on students regarding academic progress, behavior, and overall well-being
- Help implement and follow classroom discipline protocol, and overall RFSAfterschool culture
- Maintain punctuality and good attendance, providing notification to youth program coordinator in the event of lateness or unexpected absence, as well as following organization protocol for planned absences
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Sensitivity to people of all cultures, ethnicities, and religious backgrounds.
- Submit to a criminal background check.
- Dependable and committed to the safety, health, and well-being of refugee youth.
- At least 18 years of age and able to be physically active and mentally prepared to work with refugee youth of different ages, abilities, and backgrounds.
- College credit in Early Childhood Education a plus
- Experience working with youth grades 1-8 in an educational setting, preferably refugee and/or immigrant youth
- Commitment to organization's mission and serving refugees.
Schedule: Spring Semester; 2-4 days/week (Mon-Thu), 2-6pm Compensation: Unpaid.
