Community Health and Volunteer Outreach Intern

AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION

Mission: To reduce disability and death from cardiovascular disease and stroke.

Job title: Intern, Field Development – Los Angeles

Organizational Unit: Los Angeles, Health Equities

9-20 hours/week (hours vary depending on the month)

Immediate Supervisor: Administrative Assistant

Supervisory Responsibilities: Volunteers

Function – Scope Statement:

This role will be the Community Resource Coordinator (CRC) for Greater Los Angeles (specifically Los Angeles County and Ventura County). This position will primarily include handling all health fairs both directly and indirectly and handle all volunteers by connecting them with volunteer opportunities throughout AHA.

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Responsible for performing external communications with each health fair contact person.
  2. Responsible for performing external and internal communications with each new volunteer and connecting them with appropriate volunteer opportunities.
  3. Perform the logistics, training and/or communications with health fair representatives each month.
  4. Attend corporate/community health fairs as an AHA health fair representative either by yourself or with other AHA staff or AHA volunteers on an as-needed basis.
  5. Promote and market current (and new) community health literature or tools provided either by the health equities directors or communications department.
  6. Maintain monthly reports for the VP of Communications.
  7. Attend CRC meetings primarily via conference calls.
  8. Build sustainable relationships with customers, staff and volunteers.
  9. Assist at special events including major fundraisers such as Heart Walk, Heart Chase, Heart Ball, etc.
  10. Assist with the facilitation of volunteer orientations.
  11. Assist the health equities directors or community health director with their events on a as-needed basis.
  12. Train and build the community health speakers bureau.
  13. Update and provide a continual supply of monthly health fair kits to the health fair representatives and/or speakers bureau on a monthly as-needed basis.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Minimum time commitment: 3 months, strongly prefer 6 month commitment; must come in at least three days a week in the office.
  2. Appreciation/Understanding of community health
  3. Ability and willingness to travel all across Los Angeles County for health fairs; have a means of reliable transportation
  4. Strong administrative skills: typing, making phone calls, sending e-mails
  5. Strong customer service with basic email/phone etiquette
  6. Strong communication and marketing skills (both oral and written)
  7. Willingness to work independently and also willing to work irregular hours for events
  8. Proven ability to manage multiple projects and tasks; ability to prioritize tasks
  9. Proficient in using PC computers and Microsoft Office for word processing, data spreadsheets and internet research

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. In college or graduate school for public health or related major/degree
  2. Previous internship experience
  3. Bilingual in Spanish/English
  4. Previous volunteer management experience

Physical and Mental Requirements:

Physical requirements include: sight, hearing, sitting, standing, bending, or squatting for most of the day; skills essential for successful communications include: speaking over the phone and writing. Ability to interact and communicate with customers, and to clearly and concisely exchange ideas, facts and information. Ability to effectively plan and manage workflow, work on multiple projects simultaneously and manage project details with limited supervision. Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds with the expectation that items in excess of 20 pounds would be broken down in smaller components or additional assistance is required before lifting. Ability to conceptualize, reason through problems, make effective decisions and develop alternative solution and provide excellent customer service while ensuring compliance with the American Heart Association's policies and procedures.

Compensation:

Unpaid internship, but AHA is willing to work with the college/university to provide school credit
