- Thanda, South Africa
September/October: (6/12 months)
- Livingstone, Zambia
- St. Lucia, South Africa
- Thanda, South Africa
- Cape Town, South Africa
Description:
- Overall: THAF interns work in partnership with African Impact, an African volunteer organisation. Their role is to work with our community projects on the ground. This can be anything from assisting with identifying, monitoring and evaluating sustainable projects. The role also consists of fundraising (locally and internationally), working with volunteers, building up local networks, traking and reporting on donations and organising events. No two days are ever the same. This role needs someone who enjoys a challenge and is flexible.
- Thanda: Thanda is a new project that is set in rural Kwazulu-natal. For the right person this would be a fantastic project. Set in the middle of a game reserve seeing Lions and elephants would defiantly be part of day to day life, but as is long hours and an extremely rural setting. For someone who enjoys the bright city life and a diverse social life this is not the right placement. The work in the community is a fantastic opportunity, due to the setting THAF is one of the only NGO's operating in this area, in a community that has been devastated by HIV and poverty. The projects that we are currently working with are and income generation project, a local school and the refurbishment of a local clinic.
- Livingstone: This is our most established site and due to this many of the structures are in place. The placement not only offers a variety of community work but also diverse outdoor activities. The community work that we are currently focusing on is the refurbishment of a local school, fundraising to build a general hospital and a sponsor a child program that reaches over seventy children. The current intern is Zambia has spent a lot of time building up local business networks, and we would like this to continue. Some experience of fundraising would be extremely beneficial for this program.
- St. Lucia: This is a small town on the coast in Kwazulu-natal, in South Africa. This project is also very established, and interns would work with the assistance and guidance from the local chief. The diversity between a fairly developed holiday town and the very underprivileged local communities makes this an interesting placement. The campaigns that are running in St. Lucia are building at a local crèche, raising funds and equipment for home based care, and 10 families which is a local family empowerment program.
- Cape Town: Also an extremely exciting project, as we are looking to expand programs off the peninsular and into the larger townships. This is great for someone who would like to gain experience in monitoring and evaluation. The projects that we are currently working with are an education enrichment program at a children's home in Masiphumelele and a feeding program for preschool children in RedHill. Cape town has the challenge of working with many different cultural groups and gaining understanding of the long lasting effects of segregation.
Costs:
As a small NPO we have two make sure we cover all costs. For this reason all inters are asked to contribute GBP350 ($545) to cover the cost for the Chairty Development manager to fly to the project to do training. Also interns are expected to contribute $340 p/m (ZAR3000) for room and board.
