Summary Description

The AAUW Art, Editorial, and Media Department is seeking a talented undergraduate or graduate student as an intern to assist on media relations assignments and projects. The intern will also provide key assistance and important contributions on several special projects.

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. Since 1881, AAUW has been one of the nation's leading voices promoting education and equity for women and girls.

This internship is ideal for students who are passionate about equity for women and who are seeking to explore professional career possibilities in media relations, public relations, communications or related fields.

A minimum of 30 hours per week is strongly desired and preference will be given to applicants available on a full time basis. The internship can be used for academic credit.

Essential Duties

  • Media relations activities, media monitoring, and news item compilation report
  • Tracking issues of importance to AAUW in the news
  • Writing media relations documents, including press releases, blog posts, and media advisories
  • Researching and contributing to op-ed and letters to the editor efforts
  • Researching and assisting with building media lists
  • Coordinating press event planning and logistics
  • Tweeting for AAUW media relations department
  • Building relationships with reporters and bloggers via social media
  • General assistance to media relations staff, as needed

Special Projects

  • Assistance on research report launch and other initiatives as requested

Minimum Qualifications

  • Competency in Vocus PR software
  • Excellent writing is an essential requirement
  • Degree in communications, public relations, and/or journalism
  • Strong oral communications, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
  • Ability to multitask and meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and within a team
  • Strong interest in women's equity and social justice issues
  • Good sense of humor

Additional Skills

  • Experience preparing spokespersons for media interviews is a plus
  • Photography, copy editing (AP style preferred), and/or video and video editing skills a plus
  • Familiarity with use of Flip Camera for capturing short video material
