Bridge of Life School is a Khmer-run not-for-profit organization providing educational related programming at three under-resourced sites in the Cambodian countryside. The Big Yellow House is a not-for-profit social enterprise that operates a guesthouse in Siem Reap for socially responsible tourists and volunteers. All profits from the guesthouse are transferred to Bridge of Life School.
We are recruiting foreign volunteers to work for 4-12 months as supporting staff alongside our Khmer team. The position is unique, multidimensional, and has the potential to change daily and evolve as time goes on. It works in a variety of fields including hospitality and non-profit management, marketing, programming, and fundraising. It requires the person to be flexible and willing to try and succeed at new things. The individual must also be vision oriented. He or she should complete assigned tasks competently, but more importantly be looking forward and using his or her knowledge and skills to improve our organization and promote better practice across the board.
Potential responsibilities include:
An Ideal Candidate:
Compensation & Accommodation:
We do not compensate foreign staff at this time. You will receive 50% off our restaurant menu and can also eat one Khmer meal daily at the guesthouse with our staff. We will also give you a small bonus when hosting volunteer groups to compensate you for the extra hours of work. This is to be determined and depends on group size and length of stay.
You are welcome to live in the shared staff room at the guesthouse for free or can stay in one of the guesthouse rooms for approximately $210 a month per room (fan and hot water) or $250-300 a month per room for air-conditioning and hot water (depends on your daily use as power is extremely expensive in Cambodia).
Other Requirements:
To volunteer with us you need to purchase international travelers insurance (we will help you find affordable coverage) and sign a waiver limiting our liabilities during your stay. You may be required to submit a police report and are required to read and sign our child protection policy upon arrival. You also need to purchase a bicycle or moped so you can easily commute around the city. Finally, you are required to study Khmer for one hour daily with one of our staff members (this can be neglected in peak season).
We encourage you to fundraise and make a donation to the school before you come to Siem Reap. This is not required but helps cover the costs during your orientation and training as well as general help (transportation, translation help, Khmer classes) that you will receive throughout your stay.
