External Communications Internship/Fellowship

About Starfish Project: Starfish Project was established in 2006 to empower exploited women in Asia. The Project developed a socially responsible jewelry business in order to provide women with alternative employment and a range of holistic care opportunities. In 2011, the project has grown to support approximately 35 women in 2 different cities, primarily through the jewelry company where women have taken on new levels of responsibility and leadership, and are able to provide for their families through meaningful employment. Starfish Project also provides opportunities for women to heal and grow through counseling, vocational training, language acquisition, family education benefits and health care access, as well as providing housing in our women's shelter. Location: Asia Office

Department: Operations

Purpose of Role: To maintain and boost Starfish Project's presence on the internet via social media, blogs, news websites, etc.

Commitment: 1 year, part-time (20 hours/week)

Reports to: Director of Operations

Staff directly reporting to this position: None

Other Information:The External Communications Internship has the option of being a Work/Study internship. Work/Study Internships allow for approximately 10 hours/week of in-class language studies at a local language institution.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities

  • Manage all communication via web media including (but not limited to) Facebook, Twitter, blogs, newsletters
  • Update all of Starfish Project's media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, blog)
  • Field all comments, messages, and responses to posts on social media outlets
  • Forecast trends in fashion and jewelry design, and/or social justice causes on the internet
  • Make contact with various blogs and websites about featuring Starfish Project
  • Write and distribute Starfish Project newsletter
  • Write and distribute Rep newsletter
  • Proofread and edit any materials that will be sent to print

Qualification and Experience

  • Good working knowledge of social media platforms
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills
  • Experience in writing for publishing and editing
  • Strong sense of discretion when communicating sensitive information
  • Experience or exhibited interest in fashion, jewelry design, and/or social justice causes
  • Good customer service and public relations skills
  • Experience in sales and/or marketing a plus
  • Experience in Mail Chimp, Wordpress (or other blogging platforms), and graphic design software a plus
