Internship Description: The Communications & Events Intern will assist the Development Team with online communications including web site updating, media-related projects and special events. The internship is part-time (minimum 2 days per week) for a period of at least 3 to 4 months. Please note that this is an unpaid internship; however, we will work with students to obtain credit toward their coursework.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assist with the writing, formatting and distribution of press releases, monthly e-newsletter, blog posts and website items, etc.
  • Assist with ongoing maintenance of AAFSC's website and social media accounts
  • Assist with creation and maintenance of media lists
  • Assist with all aspects of planning special events, including cultivating sponsors, advertisement, creation of print and online material, etc.
  • Assist with organization and creation of systems for keeping track of media clippings, photographs and videos
  • Monitor media coverage of AAFSC; monitor media outlets (newspapers, television, radio) for news and developments regarding immigrant communities (with a special focus on the Arab American community), as well as thematic issues, such as domestic violence, sexual assault or immigration laws
  • Assist in database maintenance/quality control and record-keeping
  • Other tasks as required to assist with the overall strategy of the development team

Qualifications:

  • Advanced undergraduate or graduate degree student
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent organizational, time-management, follow-up, and administrative skills with a strong attention to detail
  • Excellent research skills
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently and as a part of a team in a deadline driven environment
  • Strong computer skills: CMS (i.e. Textpattern), MailChimp or similar email list management system, WordPress or similar blog publishing tool; HTML familiarity, Microsoft Office Suite (emphasis on Word and Excel), Social Media (Facebook, Twitter , etc.)
  • Previous event planning experience preferred
  • Previous experience in a non-profit environment preferred
  • Proficiency with graphics programs, such as Adobe Photoshop, and interest/experience in basic coding are pluses
