Description du stage

Do you enjoy Mexican art and culture? Have a passion for museums, books and collections? We'd like to hear from you!

Casa Dolores, Center for the Study of the Popular Arts of Mexico, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization devoted to the collection, preservation, study, and exhibition of an extensive variety of objects of the popular arts of Mexico. Our mission is to expand the passion of Mexican Arts and Crafts with the community and visitors by stimulating the appreciation of the Mexican culture through educational programs, demonstrations, and free access to exhibits and the center's library.

The Center currently houses a collection of 6,000+ objects in a variety of mediums: clay, ceramic, wood, natural fibers, leather, paper, glass, and tin. It is the largest collection of hand crafted art from Mexico on the Central Coast.

The Collections intern volunteers 10-15 hours a week for 3-4 months helping with the following:

  • Organizing the library's inventory
  • Cataloging books in the library
  • Developing finding aids
  • Maintenance of the library

Accepted interns are encouraged to work out of the Center during our hours of operation, 12 – 5 pm Tuesday - Saturday, in downtown Santa Barbara. Casa Dolores is happy to work with you and your college or university to meet course requirements and your educational goals. Unfortunately, we cannot offer stipends or housing at this time. Candidates must either be enrolled in or a recent graduate of an undergraduate or graduate program emphasizing library studies, art, history, museum studies, Chicano studies, or related field.

Requirements:

-Interest in/ knowledge of Mexican art and culture, a plus

-Interest in/ knowledge of museum database software or collection management

-Comprehension of general/best museum practices, a plus

-Excellent attention to detail

-Superior research and writing skills

-Photography skills, a plus

-Ability to work independently

-Self-motivated essential

-Intern must also have and use his/her own laptop and applicable software
