The American Red Cross International Services Department (ISD) seeks to prevent and alleviate human suffering around the world by responding to disasters, building safer, more resilient communities, and educating future humanitarians. In the coming years the American Red Cross will deepen and expand its programming around the world while also working to strengthen the global Red Cross Red Crescent network, in order to deliver vital help and hope to some of the most vulnerable communities.
SUMMARY:
The American Red Cross International Services Department is looking for a part-time intern to help create standardized design products and communications materials in support of its growing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) team. Successful applicants will possess the creativity and drive to translate detailed, sometimes difficult technical concepts provided by the mapping team into accessible, enjoyable materials, including manuals, templates, and videos.
The position will work as part of a dynamic team of humanitarian information management professionals. We are looking for someone who can work for a period of 12 to 20 hours per week from January through mid-May 2013. This internship is paid.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assemble creative, accessible, and well-designed training materials for mapping and geospatial technologies, to be used by American Red Cross partners around the world.
- Create standardized map templates for Red Cross international programs.
- Assist in the production of static and interactive mapping products.
- Create useful and informative infographics and data visualizations for internal and external documents.
- Assist in the production of blog posts publicizing the creative ways the Red Cross is leveraging GIS in support of our international programs.
- Provide support to other tasks as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Recent graduate or current student working toward BA or MA, preferably in the fine arts, graphic design, cartography, or related field.
- High level of familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite products (Illustrator and InDesign) or open source equivalents.
- Self-starter who can work well independently and in teams.
- Comfort with learning new technologies on the fly; unafraid of picking up new technical skills as the situation demands.
- Previous cartography experience preferred.
- Experience with producing and editing simple videos a plus.
- Desired but not required: practical knowledge of web markup, design, and/or scripting languages: HTML, CSS, SQL, JavaScript, Python.
- Spanish and/or French language proficiency desirable.
