Uganda Youth and Women's Effort Fighting AIDS (UYWEFA) aims to mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS for people with and affected by HIV/AIDS through the provision of home based care, advocation of health rights and the empowerment of children, women and youth within the community. UYWEFA's long-term objective is to ensure people affected by HIV/AIDS in the community become self sufficient, establish their own income generating activities and provide support and education to their children and others in the community.
UYWEFA was established in 2007 by people living with HIV/AIDS in Kazo after realizing gaps in home based care in the community. It quickly created a program of activities and campaigns designed to promote awareness and sensitization of the community.
UYWEFA is registered with Wakiso District Directorate of Community Based Services as community based organisation (reference WCBO 325/07). It is governed by a Board of Directors, consisting of three members who continuously develop policy, strategies and programs for the organization. The board brings together the professional experience of the different members to reach out at policy makers at levels, programs implementers and communities.
The organization has a membership program, which is open to all those who are interested in supporting, being informed or participating in UYWEFA's work. Members are kept regularly informed of UYWEFA activities through a newsletter, "The UYWEFA Guardian".
UYWEFA has a coordinating secretariat located at Kazo Central Local Council 1 Building, Nansana Town Council, Wakiso District. The coordinating secretariat is responsible for overseeing implementation of UYWEFA program activities and carrying out campaigns on specific issues as directed by the board.
