The mission of the School of American Ballet is to train dancers in all ways necessary for professional careers in classical ballet, building upon principles defined by the School's founders -- George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein. Further, its mission is to serve as the official academy of New York City Ballet and to maintain its position as the pre-eminent academy of ballet in the United States, annually providing exceptional dancers for companiers around the world.
Within a campus dedicated to the training of highly talented students in ballet, the staff of the Office of Student Life is committed to providing a high quality of life and students' well being beyond their ballet training. This commitment is realized:
- Through attending to the developmental needs of students, enhancing their personal and professional growth and instilling a sense of responsibility and citizenship;
- Through fostering and promoting a well-rounded approach to the emotional, social, physical, cultural, intellectual, and artistic aspects of students' lives;
- Through providing age-appropriate programs and services in the areas of counseling and health, housing and residence life, activities, community rules and regulations;
- Through establishing a living and learning environment, a safe and healthy community where growth can occur and the integration of artistic, academic and life skills is the overall goal.
