Redemption Children's Home shelters children who for one or other reason cannot stay with their own parents or extended families. It is a home based on Christian values for children in need and was founded in 2004 by Abraham Lermu Saaka. Abraham started the home after graduating from university, still searching for what he wanted to do in his life. His attention was drawn to a few homeless children in his hometown Damongo. Having faced poverty and separation with his own family in his early years, he was drawn to help these children. Without owning anything he trusted in God to help him to take care of the children. In 2004 he started to shelter a few children in his own home and things started to grow from there.
'External Religious Worship that is pure and unblemished in the sight of God the father is to visit and help and care for the orphans and widows in their afflictions and need, to keep oneself unspotted and contaminated from the world' (James 1:27)
Redemption Children's Home is located in Damongo, the Northern Region of Ghana. The Northern Region is one of the poorest regions of Ghana. About 50% of the population lives under the poverty line of 1USD a day. The illiteracy level is very high and estimated to be around 70%. Most people try to earn a living by farming. The poverty level leaves the population very vulnerable. When one or both parents die, taking care of the children becomes a serious problem. Extended family is also not always capable to step in.
Each child comes in with his or her own story at different ages and the psychological and sometimes physical trauma that has let them to come to Redemption Children's Home in the first place. Some lost both of their parents, some are accused of witchcraft and expelled from their village and others were living on the streets. The Redemption Children's Home is not just a house, but a home with a new family in which they are loved, regardless of their race or their social and religious background. Abraham Saaka is like a father to them and he raises the children to become firm believers in Christ, which gives them new strength to face the world. The older children function as older brothers and sisters and help the little ones with washing, eating and other daily activities. We try to raise them to become self-reliant and independent thinking individuals who will become positive and active members of the society.
Redemption Children's Home is an officially registered non-governmental organization (NGO) and currently offers a home for 48 children in the age of 1-19 years old.
