REACH, (Real Experiences Affecting Change), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, brings together youth and young adults from all over the East Cost to share a week of their lives as they learn what it means to serve in the community. Our mission is to Reach Together with the people of Roanoke to restore hope, alleviate loneliness and empower individuals by bringing folks together to transform homes, lives and entire communities. We do this through collaboration, community engagement and ABCD (Asset Based Community Development).
Our Organization's Goals are threefold
1 To foster a life of serving others
2 To affect change through Asset Based Community Development
3 To sustain that change through the development of healthy relationships
First, for the community in which we work:
To bring communities together (neighborhoods, REACH participants and interested city residents) through meals, events activities and projects
To connect and engage individuals, associations and businesses
To restore hope and empower individuals to affect sustainable transformation
Second, for the individuals participating in our service projects
To involve them in a week of service to others
To help them understand how difficult it is to ask for and accept help and the importance of being able to do so
To bring people of diverse economic and social backgrounds together
To encourage and empower individuals to live a life of service to others
Third, for the staff (REACH interns):
To teach Servant Leadership
To challenge their understanding of the world and their place in it
To stretch them beyond their perceived limitations
To foster the idea that they can and should make a difference
