Women's Place of South Niagara Inc. provides shelter for survivors of violence, offers counselling for mothers and children, as well as legal advocacy, transitional housing and support and child and youth programs. Last year alone, our shelters received 1,977 crisis calls, provided safe shelter to 242 women and children and assisted hundreds of additional women and children through our outreach programs and services.
Women's Place of South Niagara Inc. began as two sister organizations: one in Niagara Falls and the other in Welland. The two groups operated separately for some time before joining together in 1997. Nova House, our Niagara Falls shelter, began with Niagara Women in Crisis, which purchased and opened Nova House in 1983. Serenity Place, our Welland shelter, began in Women's Place Welland & District Inc. which became operational in 1981. This group operated a different shelter in Welland before building the current Serenity Place, which was opened in 1996.
