Founded in 2003, Eagle Academy Public Charter School is Washington, D.C.'s first exclusively early childhood public charter school and is proud to be the first early childhood school in the District fully accredited by the Middle States Association for the Accreditation of Schools, Colleges, and Universities. Beginning with preschool, the program has expanded to include grades 1 through 3. Eagle Academy Public Charter School's mission is to "build the foundation for a promising future for all students in a rich, robust learning environment." The school nurtures creativity and problem solving abilities while fostering cognitive, social, and emotional growth for its active learners. Because it is a STEM school, math and science are spotlighted in grades 1-3, and technology is especially emphasized. With state-of-the-art technology in every classroom, Eagle Academy's program reflects a keen appreciation for the power of technology in today's complex world. Respect and collaboration in a diverse learning community are core values at Eagle Academy.
Through a competitive process, Eagle Academy was awarded the former McGogney Elementary, a 67,000 square foot facility on 4.1 acres in the District's Ward 8. The school is currently under renovation. When the exciting, healthy and sustainable building is ready for occupation by the fall of 2012, it is expected to house approximately 600 students, including about 100 youngsters who receive levels 1-4 special education services. Eagle Academy also operates a second, smaller campus on New Jersey Avenue in South East Washington.
As an early childhood program, Eagle Academy PCS recognizes the vital role that families play in the lives of students. The school is deeply invested in building a strong community and seeks a leader who is equally invested. Knowing that healthy families send children to school better prepared to learn, Eagle Academy is incorporating a health center into the new facility and will host a parent center as well. The school's next principal must demonstrate a genuine commitment to understanding what families need to nurture student success and the expertise to engage the community with warmth, skill, and appropriate supports.
