Uganda Youth and Women's Effort Fighting AIDS (UYWEFA) aims to mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS for people with and affected by HIV/AIDS through the provision of home based care, advocating for health rights and the empowerment of children, women and youth within the community. UYWEFA's long-term objective is to ensure people affected by HIV/AIDS in the community become self-sufficient, establish their own income generating activities and provide support and education to their children.
UYWEFA was established in 2007 by people living with HIV/AIDS in Kazo after noticing gaps in home based care in the community. It quickly created a program of activities and campaigns designed to promote awareness. UYWEFA is registered with Wakiso District Directorate of Community Based Services as community based organization. The organization has a membership program, which is open to all those who are interested in supporting, being informed or participating in UYWEFA's work.
UYWEFA offers support for orphans and vulnerable children, people with HIV and youth activities. UYWEFA provides support for early childhood education through the UYWEFA International Education Centre and working with the Local Council to encourage dropouts to return to school. Through its home based care and counseling programs, UYWEFA supports the physical and mental health of HIV positive individuals in Kazo. Additionally UYWEFA offers economic empowerment through training programs providing proven income generating opportunities. UYWEFA encourages youth to take an active role in their community by involving them in field work and community outreach. To offer youth alternatives to drugs and crime UYWEFA offers space and equipment for film and dance programs.
