Exo Foundation is a non-for profit organization based in Cambodia that has been established by Exotissimo Travel a leading tour operator based in Southeast Asia (Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Viet Nam, China) . Although Exotissimo remains one of the major donor and cover as well all operational costs, EXO Foundation acts as an independent NGO.
The Exo Foundation's mission is to continually foster sustainable tourism and instigate a system of travel that incorporates long-term strategies to maximize the benefits for local communities. The Foundation aims to improve the livelihoods of the poorest and disadvantaged populations, while minimizing the negative social, cultural and environmental impacts tourism may generate.
The role of Exo Foundation is multi purpose, on one hand it is to educate and advise Exotissimo Travel teams and clients (travel agents and direct travellers) on best practices in responsible travel to ensure their activities support the sustainable development of the region, and on the other hand it directly supports (fund) projects which are contributing to the sustainable development of destinations.
Essentially, the idea of 'responsible tourism' transcends conventional perceptions of travel, in stead immersing clients in authentic experiences that mutually benefit both local and visitor. EXO Foundation is raising awareness on the fact that that good intentions too often lead to negative impacts. As such we are not in favour of paid voluntourism, and excessive volunteer presence in kids's centers, as well EXO Foundation together with Friends International and UNICEF is campaigning to stop school, and all kids' centers visits by tourists.
Thematically, the projects we support touch upon various kinds of socio, cultural, environmental and economic issues and cover areas including:
- Education (providing basic education and vocational training)
- community based tourism supportive activities
- Shelters (for children, disadvantaged)
- Health care
- Community development; support by helping develop revenue generating activities
- Environmental conservation
- Disaster relief
A list of supported projects and the option to donate is available through our website although it requires serious updating updating the website will precisely be one of the key task f the intern.
