The Anacostia Watershed Society (AWS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit environmental advocacy organization addressing land and water conservation issues affecting the Anacostia River and its surrounding communities in Washington, D.C. and the State of Maryland.
Working in close partnership with other community groups and individual volunteers from the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area, AWS seeks to improve quality of life in the region by returning the Anacostia River to a swimmable and fishable condition.
In fulfillment of its mandate to clean the waters, recover the shores, and honor the heritage of the Anacostia River and its tributary creeks and streams, AWS develops and implements cutting-edge education and restoration programs promoting environmental stewardship in local communities and hands-on experience with the natural world.
Volunteers are always needed to assist with various outdoor projects including tree planting, trash pick-up, invasive plant removal, and wetland planting. Professionals with experience in non-profit fundraising and/or communications work are welcome to help with the identification and solicitation of funding sources, grants management, and the development of strategic information and fundraising campaigns.
