À propos

LIFT-DC’s mission is to help families break the cycle of poverty in the DMV (District, Maryland, and Virginia). Nationally, LIFT is working to establish a new standard for holistic and enduring solutions in our country's fight against poverty. (For opportunities with LIFT's National headquarters also located in Washington, DC please visit their idealist page here).

We are committed to working closely with parents to build the strong personal, social and financial foundations they need to get ahead. By continuously learning from our community Members and innovating our program model, we support LIFT Members as they set their own goals and work hard to achieve them, equipping them with the skills they need to improve the financial stability and overall well-being for their families. They also build a support network, confidence in what they bring to the table and the skills to manage tough times in the future.  Because this work cannot be done alone, LIFT focuses on building strong community collaborations with a wide range of local, regional and national partners to help ensure families receive the resources and support they need.

LIFT connects with families through four sites located in communities with some of the highest rates of concentrated poverty: Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Washington, DC. Since LIFT’s founding, over 12,000 volunteer Advocates have served nearly 100,000 individuals and families.

History in the District of Columbia

The first LIFT resource center in Washington, DC was founded in the fall of 1999 by two Georgetown University students, Elena Boyd ('02) and Sarita Daftary ('03). Originally operating out of common rooms on Georgetown University's campus, LIFT-DC (formerly NSP-DC) officially moved into the Perry School Community Services Center in the summer of 2000. The Perry School was originally the first high school for African-American students in the District of Columbia and now serves as a hub of community support in northwest Washington DC.
