Nationally, we are failing to prepare our students for long-term success: In America today, only eight percent of ninth graders in low-income communities are expected to graduate from college by age 25. In the Chicago Public Schools, only 18 percent of incoming ninth graders enroll in four-year universities after high school, and only eight percent are expected to graduate from college by age 25. In the Houston Independent School District, only 15 percent of ninth graders are expected to graduate from college by this age.
These numbers stand in stark contrast to rates for students who grow up in the top income quartile, where 82 percent of ninth graders are expected to graduate from college. At OneGoal, we believe it is an economic and moral imperative to improve college graduation —rates – and to broaden our collective sense of what is possible – in Houston, Chicago and beyond.
As the country's only teacher-led college persistence organization, OneGoal identifies trains and supports our nation's most effective teachers to lead underperforming high school students to reach their full potential and graduate from college. We envision a day when every student has the opportunity to graduate from college.
Our model has been honed through rigorous experimentation, testing and evaluation. As we learn new lessons and continuously work to improve our model, we have seen remarkable success. In Chicago Public Schools, where just eight percent of students graduate from college by age 25, 94 percent of OneGoal Fellows have enrolled in college, and 85 percent of OneGoal Alumni are persisting in college, on track to graduate.
