The mission of Girls on the Run of the Bay Area is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. We administer non-competitive, curriculum-based running programs in San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, and San Mateo Counties. The 10-week program combines training for a one-mile or 5K running event with uplifting workouts that encourage emotional, social, and physical development. The Girls on the Run curriculum incorporates fun, active lessons addressing issues such as drugs and alcohol, media images, gossiping, physical health, emotional well-being, cooperation, and community. Program sessions, which primarily meet at a school site, are held twice per week for one hour and are led by two volunteers who devote their time and passion to a group of up to 16 girls.
Founded in 2002 Girls on the Run San Francisco is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Girls on the Run San Francisco is a chapter of Girls on the Run International, which was founded in 1996 and is based in Charlotte, NC. About 2000 girls participate in our local bay area programs each year.
