SOHO2O Gallery Chelsea is a non-profit artist run gallery that has been promoting the work of women artists since 1973 through gallery exhibitions and public programming. As part of our continued commitment to the arts we are introducing a 3-month studio residency program for visual artists.
The studio space is located at 547 West 27thStreet, in the heart of the Chelsea art community of New York City. The setting offers a community of art professionals and commercial as well as non-profit galleries and art spaces. The studio's proximity to the contemporary art center makes it a convenient place to see renowned exhibitions in the neighborhood, as well as arranging studio visits with gallerists, critics and curators.
What the residency offers:
We will select artists for residencies for the 2013 season. Please state your preference in the statement portion of your application. Jan.-March / April – June / Oct.-December
•Three-month studio residency. Work space only, artist must have separate housing arrangements.
•The studio is located within SOHO20 Gallery. It is a private studio space that measures 26x9 feet. The studio offers 13 foot ceilings and over 40 feet of workable wall space.
•Access to the studios 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. *Occasionally artist will need to coordinate use with scheduled gallery events.
•Opportunities to present works to curators, critics, arts professionals, and the general public.
•Artists are encouraged to present finished work to the public near the end of the residency with a gallery-sponsored OPEN STUDIO event with an optional artists talk.
•Application is open to both men and women artists. Note that the studio residency at 547 W. 27thStreet is for work use only. There is absolutely no living space allowed.
Eligibility:
All applicants must be residents of the United States or have a valid visa not expiring before the end of the program, 18 years or older, may not be enrolled in any degree seeking program. Preference is given to individuals in need of studio space. Applicants may not be a resident artist in another studio program at the same time as the 2013 SOHO2O Studio residency. Artists working in all mediums are invited to apply.
Selection Process
A panel of SOHO2O Gallery artists and board members will review applications and select an artist for the 2013 season. Artists will be selected based on the quality of their work and their potential for making the most of their time in the program. Consideration will be given to the compatibility between the artist and the gallery studio space. Deadline is by midnight on the date shown. All applicants will receive notification via email at least 2 weeks before the start of the residency. Please do not contact the gallery to check on the status of your application.
Application Process:
There is a $35 application fee. Applicants should follow the application process online at http://www.soho20gallery.com/New/residency.html Applicants should submit 5 images, $5 each additional image. Also include a brief statement and 1 page resume. This will be cut and pasted into the "profile" portion of the online application. Finalists will be asked to bring work samples to gallery to meet with SOHO2O board members before the final selection. This is not optional. You must be available to meet with the board in order to be selected for the residency.
