Motivating Action Through Community Health Outreach, one of Harlem's leading anti-childhood obesity programs, is recruiting exercise teachers for children 8-13 for an afterschool and weekend program in East and West Harlem. The hours of the program are Mondays and Fridays 4-6pm and Saturdays from 10-2, but you will only be asked to volunteer based on your schedule! Exercise teachers will be expected to lead one-hour exercise classes with approxomately 20 students. Training and curriculum will be provided, and creativity is encouraged. A certification in exercise instruction is preferred but not required. Enthusiasm for working with children and an interest in fitness and promoting healthy behavior is required!
This is an excellent opportunity for an undergraduate or graduate student interested in public health or wellness promotion, or a fitness professional interested in working in at-risk communities.
What is MAChO? MAChO stands for Motivating Action through Community Health Outreach. It started out as the Movement Against Childhood Obesity (which is where our little 'h' came from). MAChO is a student-run volunteer program based in the Community Service Office of Weill Cornell Medical College (WCMC), committed to empowering youth through the promotion of healthy living. We run free after-school programs focused on nutrition and physiology education, fitness, and personal development. We also offer nutrition education and fitness classes for parents on Saturdays. We collaborate with several mission-aligned and community-based organizations to implement an innovative and holistic program that empowers our youth to adopt healthy lifestyles early on.
Please write a one-paragraph (200 words max) description detailing why you are interested in volunteering as an exercise teacher with MAChO, including any relevant background you possess. E-mail your paragraph to Elizabeth Keating, MAChO External Relations and Excercise Teacher Director at ElizabethSKeating@gmail.com
