Become a mentor for a refugee family!
Family Mentors support newly-arrived refugee families by helping them adapt to life in the U.S., learn basic life skills and discover American culture. Mentors provide friendly encouragement as refugees work toward self-sufficiency and become familiar with American and local customs.
We are currently seeking mentors for refugee families and individuals from DARFUR, ERITREA, BHUTAN and BURMA.
Essential Position Functions:
- Assist refugees in becoming familiar with the local community.
- Help refugees manage household affairs.
- Practice English and language skills.
- Other related activities according to need and interest.
Requirements:
- Ability to interact with the refugee/s on a regular basis
- Interest in learning about the IRC, refugees, and cross-cultural communication
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English; additional fluency in a refugee language beneficial
- Willingness to adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies
- A car/driver's license is strongly preferred, but not required
Time Commitment:
- Mentors must commit to a minimum of three hours per week for 6 months. Mentors will meet with refugees based on their individual schedules.
This is an unpaid volunteer position.
