The Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition (MIRA), a statewide membership organization, advocates for the rights and opportunities of immigrants and refugees across the Commonwealth. MIRA advances this mission through education and training, leadership development, organizing, policy analysis and advocacy. MIRA has a membership of 140 organizations across Massachusetts, and works with hundreds of partners and allies across the state and nationwide.
The MIRA Coalition currently runs bi-monthly citizenship workshops. At the workshops, volunteers assist eligible green-card holders to complete the citizenship application and direct them towards resources and information to complete the citizenship process. While the work of volunteers at the workshops is essential, the first half of the citizenship programming occurs before the workshop itself - through screening calls. For every workshop of around 75 people, we talk with over 200 people (we speak with interested green-card holders who call into our hotline).
The pre-workshop conversations help to register all of the participants for the workshop, inform them of necessary preparation for the workshop, and also serves to educate those who are ineligible about the process of applying and local agencies that can provide them assistance in their quest to become a citizen.
We are looking for volunteers who are comfortable making cold calls, fluent/ conversational in Spanish, interested in working with diverse populations, and although legal expertise is welcome, it is not required. Volunteering for screening calls has a flexible schedule - you can come in to our Boston office anytime Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm, we only ask that you come for an hour or more each session. The first time you come in we will train you on the procedure for the calls and referrals (about a half hour).
If you are interested in participating with us with the screening calls please fill out this form and we will follow-up with you:
