About Sustainable Silicon Valley (SSV):

Sustainable Silicon Valley (SSV) is a dynamic collaboration of 120+ businesses, governments, academic and non-governmental organizations (Partners), and scores of volunteers addressing environmental sustainability in Silicon Valley. We envision a healthy environment, a vibrant economy, and a socially equitable community. SSV was designed to move beyond the traditional command-and-control model of environmental regulation to one of collaboration and partnership. By focusing on the desired outcome, rather than compliance-driven standards, participants can choose the methods to reach that outcome that make the most sense financially and technologically for each of them. We operate at the intersection of policy and action.

Position: UI/UX Designer

Type: Non-Compensated Volunteer Position

Time Commitment: 10-20 hrs/week

Reports to: Sustainable Silicon Valley (SSV) EcoCloud Director and/or SSV Executive Director

About EcoCloud:

The EcoCloud platform, a project of SSV in conjunction with public and private sector partners, is a virtual space where business leaders and facility managers can work with technology innovators, researchers, and government agencies to make enterprises more sustainable and profitable. EcoCloud addresses all major intersections of industry and environment, including energy, water, material resources, and transportation. Our objective is to improve sustainability in Silicon Valley and other regions by reducing waste and recapturing usable water, materials, and energy within the local system—a goal that is consistent with an overall healthy economy.

EcoCloud is a new model for collaboration and innovation toward a more sustainable region. As the project evolves, we are revamping the site's content to focus on the practical application of sustainability solutions—technologies, tools, and business practices available to address the sustainability goals of individual and institutional participants in the system. To complement that objective, we are expanding the site's real-world case studies, lessons learned, and best practices for how to more effectively adopt and implement sustainability solutions.

Job Description:

SSV is seeking a talented UI/UX Designer to help design and guide the user experience for our evolving http://www.sustainablesv.org/ecocloud/index.php site. This is a redesign and evolution of the ECOCLOUD portal, and will integrate the latest social and Web 2.0 functionality.

The volunteer will be asked:

• To create designs and mock-up layouts for a new web pages
• To provide recommendations and ideas for site wide improvements to the user experience
• To ensure site interaction and navigation is the best it can be

This is a volunteer position which enables qualified candidates to gather their capabilities in a non-profit organization environment in the field of sustainability. It is preferred that the candidate has his/her own laptop and communications tools. In return for the volunteer hours, the benefits to the volunteer candidate may include: job reference letter from the Executive Director of SSV, experience gained while volunteering on various projects, networking opportunities, and current resume entry. Most importantly, you will be helping the organization work towards its vision of a sustainable region, a thriving economy, a healthy environment and socially equitable community.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Developing and communicate UI and UX look-and-feel guidelines and templates
• Create visual concepts... and enable the development of a consistent, integrated user experience
• Create design wireframes and prototypes, including graphic design, site navigation, and layout of content, for the ECOCLOUD website
• Ensure that the layout of the content is accessible and logical; recommend improvements if necessary.

Required Skills:

• An excellent eye for design. You should know a great web UI when you see it, and be able to explain why it's great
• You should also be able to decompose an existing site and enumerate the challenges and opportunities for improvement
• Experience developing and communicating UI and UX look-and-feel guidelines and templates and working with development teams
• Ability to translate usability and user research findings into actionable and measurable design improvements
• Background in UX best practices and methods, including wireframes, flows, interaction models, user research and testing, etc.
• Deep hands-on experience developing successful web interfaces and compelling user experiences on both PC and mobile
• A strong and practical point of view on interaction design and UX
• Understanding of information-based and conversion-based Uis
• Possess at least a working knowledge of XHTML/CSS and also be fluent in MockFlow, OmniGraffle, or whatever you use to create wireframes

Experience:

This is a senior position; we're looking for somebody who has at least 5 years of UI/UX design experience.
