Prepare income taxes for low-income individuals with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program hosted by Community Trust, a division of Self-Help FCU in West Oakland (directly across from the West Oakland BART Station).
As a community development credit union, Community Trust provides underserved individuals in Oakland the opportunity to enter the financial mainstream - often for the first time, build assets, and improve their economic situations.
We provide an alternative to commercial tax preparation firms that charge tax payers excessive fees and encourage them to borrow their refunds at high interest rates. Your help is needed to permit hard-working families to claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and receive all the refunds they are due.
Volunteer tax preparers will be asked to:
- Work 3 hours per week during the tax season (Jan 15- Apr 15), Tax Site hours are: Tues and Wed 3:30-9 pm, Sat 9 am-3 pm
- Complete a free self-paced on-line course on federal tax law (estimated 25 hours) and pass an exam.
We are looking for individuals with:
- Tax preparation skills, i.e. have prepared your own, or a willingness to learn.
- Good computer skills
