The Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition (MIRA), a statewide membership organization, advocates for the rights and opportunities of immigrants and refugees across the Commonwealth. MIRA advances this mission through education and training, leadership development, organizing, policy analysis and advocacy. MIRA has a membership of 140 organizations across Massachusetts, and works with hundreds of partners and allies across the state and nationwide.
Program Background:
The MIRA Coalition runs free bi-monthly citizenship clinics for eligible green-card holders. At the clinics, volunteers assist eligible green-card holders to complete the citizenship application and direct them towards resources and information to successfully navigate the citizenship process and become fully integrated members of the United States.
To build on our monthly clinics, we are initiating a new program to offer information sessions (3+ per month) on the citizenship process in high-need areas around Boston. The sessions will offer education on the benefits of naturalization, an overview of information on the eligibility requirements for citizenship, options for fee waivers, and information on the citizenship process. The sessions will be offered in Boston and surrounding neighborhoods (from Dorchester/Mattapan in the south to Malden in the North) on a varied schedule with sessions during the day, evening, weekday and weekend.
Position Description:
At each of these sessions we are looking for 3-5 volunteers to assist with individual screening of participants to: inform them, if eligible, of upcoming citizenship clinics and register them for the clinic, or, if ineligible, what resources are available to them in their process of pursuing citizenship. We prefer for volunteers to have experience with immigration or immigrant communities, although this is not required. Haitian-creole and Spanish speakers are in particular demand for these info sessions.
While initially volunteers will be trained to assist at the information sessions, interested volunteers will have the opportunity to be trained to lead information sessions after assisting at least 4 sessions.
If you would like to participate in the information sessions, please email us. In your email, provide your resume and information on your availability, languages spoken, and experience with or interest in working with diverse populations. Email your application or any questions to jschuster@miracoalition.org
We look forward to hearing from you!
