Spanish Immersion: Quito
This is a unique opportunity to volunteer while taking daily Spanish lessons. Language Immerion can be combined with any of the ABV volunteer projects. You will have four (4) hours of Spanish instructions per day, total of 20 hours per week. This is a great way to delve into a new language. Immersion is offered from 1 week to 1 month in duration.
- Airport reception on arrival in Quito
- City orientation and project briefing with ABV staff
- Host family accommodation in modernn middle class homestay.
- 3 meals a day
- 20 hours per week of Spanish language instruction
- 20 hours per week at the volunteer project site.
- Cultural weekend activities (cooking classes, dance lessons, & more)
- Departure transfer at the end of the program

Host family accommodations in modern middle class homestay. .
3 meals per day, 7 days a week. Program support throughout by ABV local staff.

QUITO
Quito is the capital of Ecuador and the countries second largest city with an estimated population of about 2.1 million people. The beautiful, bustling city sits high in the Andes Mountains an altitude over 9000 ft. Quito's Old Town is a wonder with neighborhoods lined with colonial architecture, some of it dating to the mid 1500s when the Spanish founded the city. With its rich cultural treasures, large open plazas surrounded by cathedrals and stately public buildings, Quito has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a place of delicious food, friendly people, wonderful Andean music and colorful marketplaces.
We offer the following in Quito:

Work Schedule: 35-40 hours per week
Accommodations: host family
Meals: Yes, 3 meals a day
Requirements: 18 years, proficient Spanish
Nearly 60% of Quito's population lives in extreme poverty. These areas often lack such basic services as electricity and running water. Many of the urban poor are migrants from rural areas who come to the city in search of a better life. Unfortunately, there are few opportunities for employment. Poverty can lead not only to malnutrition, illness, delinquency, alcoholism and domestic violence, it also worsens environmental contamination.
We offer social welfare programs in Quito, in pre-schools, children's centers, residential orphanages and also medical clinics and hospitals.

Inclusions

During the Program
You should be:
- PROACTIVE - Jump in and maintain a positive attitude.
- PATIENT - Life in your host country moves slower than one might be used to. Relax and enjoy the slow pace. Remember, not everything is as organized and predictable as life in the US or UK.
- FLEXIBLE - Plans change, roads get flooded, and electricity goes out. Realize that not everything goes as planned, but good intention is always there.
- CONSIDERATE – Respect those around you and be a reliable worker at the program site. Tell your host familyif you will be late. Advise the Project Coordinator if you are sick and can not work.
- RESPECTFUL - Remember that the local people you are working with, side by side, do so with little or no salary. They do this work because they believe in it. There are times when you may not agree with or understand the organizations decisions or direction. Although your suggestions are always welcome, your faith, respect and consideration for their long term work and commitment is appreciated.
- FRIENDLY - In order to truly help someone you must get to know them. Do not be afraid to make friends with the local people. Smile, wave and see how fast you are welcomed into the community.
- TOLERANT - The food, the culture, the smells and the sounds will be unfamiliar to you at first. We recommend that you dive in and experience life head-on. You will be surprised at how quickly you will adapt.
