English Teacher for Gerkhu School
Travel about 120kms west of Kathmandu and you will find the steep green valley walls of the Trishuli river with its many subsidiaries, one of these is the Gerkhu. This region is home to many small farming communities who cut their farms in steps on the valley sides; here you will find Majghaun the village EHN is working with.
So far we have put volunteers into teaching, farming, medical and construction projects there but on this occasion we are looking for an English teacher to help the local school. EHN has been talking to the school principal who told us that the students of this school are failing a major 6 part exam only on the subject of English. We feel that a long term solution to the schools problem would be to train the English teachers as well as the students so they can continue improving on this subject when the volunteer leaves. The position requires someone with English teaching experience and if possible some teacher training experience. We would really like to get someone for one to two months but would be happy to offer a two weeks placement if required. The position would be on a 6 day a week basis with Saturday off , in Nepal they do normally finish early on a Friday as well and have many festival so days off are common.
You will be staying in Majghaun, a beautiful little village cut into the sides of a steep valley, if you decide to take this placement you will be living will a local family in their traditional home. The homes are normally brick and mud with several livestock living beside or below and most of the food consumed being grown on the land they own. It's a very simple way of life but to EHN a beautiful and sustainable way to live and one we hope to help preserve. As explained below we pay a large percentage of the money you give directly to your hosts, so you're helping them as well the community as a hole by helping improve their English teaching methods.
The Way EHN work
EHN charge £10 or $15 per day plus an £80 or $120 admin. The bulk of the money you pay goes to the home stay you'll be living with and the rest on food and transport. All you need is enough to cover luxuries such as beer, chocolate, internet, laundry and some souvenirs. Everything else is covered by EHN including your airport pickup and drop off and a city tour. In the case of this project EHN will also be making a contribution to the school for teaching materials to support the project further.
If you want to find out more about this position please contact EHN on the email address below.
