The Centro de Apoyo Escolar or CEA program (Academic Support Center) serves children aged 6-16 who live in the impoverished barrio of Camal in southern Quito. Their parents generally work all day in the local market, and most of the kids spend at least some of the day working with them. The objective of CEA is to give the kids the same chance at academic success as their non-working peers. Additionally, kids in the Ecuadorian public school system often pass through the grades without learning the necessary material. The result is that many are in-over-their-heads with their homework and need a lot of support. CEA´s aim is not only to help with their homework but also to overcome these knowledge deficits left by their poor schooling with additional recreational, creative and educational activities.
Children attend CEA either in the morning or afternoon, depending on their school schedule. An Ecuadorian educator leads each session, along with 3-4 volunteers (one of them functions as "responsable") and, usually, the CEA coordinator.
Additionally, Cenit is investigating the possibility of expanding the program to other areas of Quito. The Coordinator could have a large role in this process as well.
