Still looking for the perfect way to spend your summer break? Do you love sports, adventure, travel, and giving back? VOLUNTEER AT RC's SUMMER SPORTS CAMPS IN AMMAN, JORDAN!
RECLAIM CHILDHOOD BACKGROUND
Reclaim Childhood – a non-profit organization founded by two Williams graduates – seeks to empower Middle Eastern girls and women through sport and play. RC provides sports leagues, clinics, and summer camps to Iraqi girls ages 8-18, and coaching clinics to adult women. The organization is run by young women for young women.
SUMMER VOLUNTEER PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Every summer, RC runs four weeks of sports camp for Iraqi refugee girls living in and around Amman, Jordan. Selected RC volunteers serve as coaches for the camps – helping to design each day's schedule in addition to heading up their own group for each session. Volunteers live together in Amman. While work weeks are busy, weekends are free for participants to use as they wish. RC plans several group weekend trips that volunteers can decide whether to participate in. Past trips have included hiking through and around Petra, swimming in the Dead Sea, snorkeling in the Red Sea, as well as excursions to Egypt, Israel and Syria.
Weeks available in June and July - exact dates to be determined.
Expenses RC welcomes selected volunteers for as many sessions as they are interested in with a minimum commitment of 2 consecutive weeks. Volunteers are asked to pledge to fundraise $1,000 for each session they attend. This amount allows RC to break even on all expenses associated with having volunteers accompany them.
This fundraising commitment covers volunteers for: (1) Lodging for the full stay, (2) Transport to and from airport & to and from all volunteer activities, and (3) Meals during work week (Sunday through Thursday).
Volunteers are responsible for: (1) Airline ticket there and back, and (2) Weekend expenses.
The fundraising commitment is not a monetary amount that YOU personally donate. It's an amount that you raise through various initiatives, which we help you with along the way. Some of the fundraising initiatives you can take part in include our Mother's Day card drive, our Goals for Girls program, and various fundraising events. Each spring, we run a Mother's Day card drive where many of our summer volunteers ask their friends, family, coworkers, fellow students, teammates, etc to make a donation to Reclaim Childhood in honor of their mother. We then mail that mother a card of recognition - letting her know about the donation as well as providing her with information about RC's mission. Last year, we had several volunteers raise over $2000 from running this initiative alone. In our Goals for Girls program, participanting sports teams have team members ask their friends and family to pledge to donate to RC for every goal scored or game won or mile ran, etc. At the end of the season, metrics are tallied and checks to RC are written. If the team is successful - everyone is happy. Many summer volunteers go to the sports teams on their campuses to pitch this idea - many teams are very excited to take the project on. All proceeds from that initiative then count towards your fundraising goal.
All of these things require work on your part (and again - we'll be here to help you along the way providing you with resources and assistance wherever possible) but not monetary contributions from you. While there have been a small percentage of volunteers that have simply written a check for their fundraising commitment, the vast majority raise the full amount through initiatives such as these.
The ideal candidate should have a passion for sport, be open to new cultures, and be ready to adapt to new situations. Sports experience and Arabic language are a plus, but not required.
