Nicaragua has a problem with kids living on the streets. These kids have either been made homeless by their families or have chosen to live on the streets. A large number of them are began living on the street an early age and have started glue sniffing. This means that a majority of them lack education, healthcare, decent nutrition and a safe place to pass the night.
Casa-Nica is working with a local shelter that aims to provide these kids with everything the lack in a safe, secure and friendly environment and ultimately allow them to return to normal life. The shelter has success stories of kids that have passed through the shelter and intimately been able to get jobs and start families.
The shelter provides housing to any of the kids that want to sleep in the house (which is surprisingly few) but also will provide day care for others who only want help during the day. The kids who do not sleep at the shelter are collected in the morning from central location in town and driven to the shelter. There they are showered, given clean cloths, breakfast and lunch. Then they are taught classes including reading, maths, IT, and English and give some time to play sports and enjoy some time away from the street.
As a volunteer on this project you would assist with interacting with the kids by playing games and sports with them and just talking and joking with them. It is surprising how much difference interacting normally can make. You would also assist the teachers in their classes providing them with the education that they really need in order to start moving away from their current life. There is also the opportunity to assist in the kitchen preparing the meals and helping with the clean up. You will also help with any anything else that they shelter needs done or the kids need help with.
Apart from the English class Spanish is the spoken language in the shelter so a moderate level of Spanish is needed to get the most out of the experience. It is also a great place to practice and improve your Spanish.
The kids are all a great deal of fun to be around and interact with. All the staff are helpful and a pleasure to work along side. Any help you can provide is always gratefully appreciated.
