The volunteer will work with an organization called FRATER. They are an international organization that works to rehabilitate both physically and mentally disabled people to allow them to re-join society. The rehabilitation usually takes the form of motivation through counselling and teaching of skills that will enable self maintenance in society.
The duties of the volunteer will be to conduct counselling sessions with the disabled person and their families. These sessions will take place in the house of the disabled person as they frequently lack the means to leave. The sessions will never be conducted alone but the volunteer will always be accompanied with a FRATER staff member. The volunteer will initially assess the need for counselling and the amount of sessions and their frequency thereafter. The volunteer will be expected to make around two counselling sessions per day.
The volunteer will be working directly with people who really need their help. They will be able to make an immediate and significant improvement in the lives of the people they work with. The volunteer will be responsible for planing and implementing effective counselling sessions according to their assessment of what is required. This will require a high level of self motivation independence.
The volunteers will enable these people to regain self confidence and self belief which will in turn start them learning new professional skills. With these skills they will begin working and earning an income which will relieve their families of a financial burden they cannot afford. There are currently not sufficient funds in the local health authority to provide this important work so it must be provided through volunteers.
This position is open to either trained or student psychologists or counselors. In addition the volunteer must have a very high level of Spanish as all sessions will be conducted in Spanish without a translator.
