CITY KIDS WILDERNESS PROJECT POSITION: Afterschool Volunteer; Washington, DC Supervisor: Program Director Position: Part-time Volunteer
Position Description: Volunteers work with a small team of staff & volunteers to provide adventure-based programs for underserved and at-risk youth from Washington, DC. Our mission is to inspire confidence and leadership in children and teens from inner city Washington, D.C. We provide a multi-year experiential curriculum of outdoor adventures, backcountry trips and personal growth during afterschool and weekend trips, as well as our summer camp in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
The volunteer program includes both single day and multi-day outdoor adventure trips primarily in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia, with occasional trips beyond. Volunteers spend time with students leading and facilitating growth in individuals on their adventures. The primary role of the volunteer is to develop a positive relationship with participants, be a role model, facilitate team and personal growth, ensure the health and safety of all participants, and the successful delivery of activities and trips. Volunteers work as a team directly with the Director and Program Directors to plan and run outdoor trips. Responsibilities are shared in accordance with each volunteer's skills and abilities.
We are seeking candidates that have a passion and interest in middle school education, youth development, program development and design, and who are able to work in the outdoors as well as in a classroom. Candidates must have a passion for the outdoors, and be able to share and encourage that passion in CKWP youth. Candidates should have experience with several of the following activities: hiking, backpacking, camping, canoeing, kayaking, trip planning, trip leading, and other outdoor activities. The Afterschool Educator may also assist in building partnerships with schools and local organizations to recruit new students for the program.
This candidate must be available during after school program hours: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3:30 to 7:30pm and on occasional weekends for day or overnight trips. Additional hours may be available based on candidate interest and organizational need.
Position Commitment:
• Minimum 1 school year; Ideally 2 days per week for the duration of the school year.
Position Qualifications:
• Experience or interest in working with children in outdoor setting
• Outdoor experience or knowledge in a variety of areas; including camping, canoeing, hiking, horseback riding, swimming, backpacking, kayaking, rock climbing, biking, games & initiatives, experiential education, trip leading experience is preferred!
• 20+ years old
• Reliable, energetic, enthusiastic, patient, flexible, and a great sense of humor!
• Able to volunteer on weekends
• Positive role model
• Highly desired/Preferred first aid certifications: First Aid, CPR, WFA, WFR, LGT
• 2 references/background check
