Work as a volunteer in Ghana! Future Island School is a school with more than 300 children aged 2-12. Since 2004, Future Island has hosted dozens of volunteers from 8 different countries. No prior experience is required and volunteers are free to be creative and gain experience in each of the available areas.
Opportunities are:
Teaching: Create special lesson plans in the topic of your interest (e.g. art, French, etc.), assist teachers in class or tutor students in specific subjects.
Construction: As the construction of the school is ongoing, there is always lots to be done from purchasing materials, molding cement blocks, transporting blocks, cutting metal reinforcement rods and mixing and pouring cement.
School Administration: Participate in the day-to-day maintenance of the school by meeting with parents, tracking and purchasing supplies, registering students for class in the morning, preparing lunch, and preparing exams.
Volunteers are hosted by the school's founder, Amponsah Ababio, and his family and provided with three meals per day. This is a great oppurtunity to submerge yourself in Ghanaian culture and family life. Take part of the household, play with the children, accompany the family to church, weddings, celebrations, ...
Kumasi, the capital of Ghana's culturally vibrant Ashanti Region and the second biggest city in the country, is easily accessible from Offinso. Weekends are free to travel and experience the country's diverse people and culture. Explore the coastline (from historic Elmina Castle and Cape Coast to the canopy walk at Kakum National Park and the Accra Metropolis). Or journey east to Volta Lake and majestic waterfalls. In Northern Ghana volunteers will find Mole National Park, Wechiau Hippo Sanctuary and the mosque at Larabanga.
In order for everyone to be able to volunteer, there is no program fee. Volunteers are however encouraged to raise funds for the school before or after their visit to Ghana - but this is not obligatory
Host family fee: €30 a week (including accomodation and three meals/day)
There is no minimum length of stay. Volunteers have stayed with the project for as little as 2 weeks or as long as one year.
