Who We Are:
Many Languages One Voice (MLOV) fosters leadership and facilitates community-led initiatives to increase the meaningful inclusion of people in the District of Columbia who do not speak English as their primary language. Our work consists of advocacy and community organizing. We advocate by administering the DC Language Access Coaltion, which strives for government accessibility to limited/non-English proficient individuals. We organize, building community power and civic participation through Know Your Rights trainings, our Health Justice and our Education Justice program.
What We're Doing:
Many Languages One Voices' (MLOV) Health Justice Program educates and organizes to improve equitable access to affordable, culturally and linguistically appropriate health-related information, services, and care. The program includes a nail salon project, which works to empower limited English proficient/non English proficient nail salon workers and owners. The Project educates workers and owners about their legal right to language access - for instance, when interacting with government inspectors who oversee DC's nail salon businesses or when seeking medical services for work-related symptoms. The project also addresses industry-specific occupational health and safety concerns, wage and/or tip theft and provision of sick days.
What We Need: In response to the barriers workers experience, MLOV needs help with community outreach for the project to help build worker power to create safer, more humane and sustainable working environments. MLOV is looking for people who speak a language other than English to volunteer their time to help with outreach for the project. Volunteers who speak Vietnamese, Korean and Spanish are strongly encouraged to share their skills! MLOV is flexible with hours, will work with your schedule and provide transportation if needed.
What This Experience Offers:
You will be working in a multilingual, multiethnic and intergenerational environment that is fun and rewarding! You will gain knowledge of various DC neighborhoods and communities and have a chance to talk to a variety of people. Most importantly, you'll be contributing to an important project that will further the health and economic justice of workers and owners in the District. This is great experience for people interested in non-profits, community organizing, advocacy, and campaigns.
