Writing Resistance is looking for volunteer ASL interpreter(s) for its first writing circle for sick, disabled and Deaf folks.
About Writing Resistance:
Writing Resistance is a writing and art project for multiply marginalized sick and disabled folks. We work to center the most marginalized people in our communities by building a space for creativity, mourning, affirmation and resistance through art, writing and performance. We celebrate bitterness, love, anger, healing, defiance and survival. You can read more about Writing Resistance on our website >>
The Writing Circle:
One of our programs is a writing circle for sick and disabled folks and people who are on the receiving end of ableism and/or audism. The circle will be held twice per month. We have funding resources to provide ASL interpretation for one event per month, however to stay in line with our mission, it is crucial that all of our events have ASL interpretation and optimal accessibility.
The writing circles will be facilitated and we do not anticipate them being very large.
The volunteer opportunity:
We are needing ASL interpretation for our first writing circle on Saturday, February 2, 2013 for 2 hours from 1:30pm-3:30pm. Since we cannot financially compensate any interpreters, we are asking for help to make our event accessible. We believe that this project can thrive with community involvement. If you are an ASL interpreter and would like to have a lasting connection with Writing Resistance, we will be looking for a more regular arrangement in the future of once per month ASL interpretation. However, for the time being, we are only asking for a one time commitment of two hours.
If you are interested in volunteering as an ASL interpreter for the February 10th writing circle, please email us at writingresistance@gmail.com.
