Christian Appalachian Project (CAP), an interdenominational poverty-relief and human services organization, is seeking committed, compassionate, and talented individuals to serve as long-term (one year) and short-term (minimum commitment of 3 weeks) volunteers in eastern Kentucky.
CAP Volunteers make a commitment to the program values of Service, Community, and Spirituality. Volunteers commit to serve by volunteering full-time in one of several different human service programs for the poor and marginalized that have a focus on self-help and uplifting young people. Service areas include home repair and construction, early childhood education, hunger and poverty relief, elderly services, domestic violence survivor support, summer camp, youth education and services, disaster relief, volunteer hospitality, and human resources.
Volunteers commit to Community by living in intentional community with other volunteers, sharing meals, chores, and most important, the experience of being full-time volunteers. Volunteers are also encouraged to actively engage in the local communities in which they live and serve.
Volunteers commit to Spirituality by participating in a devotion/reflection time with their community four nights a week. CAP Volunteers are not required to be Christian, but are expected to use their time as volunteers as a time for intentional personal or spiritual growth.
All volunteers receive room and board; long-term volunteers receive additional benefits such as health insurance and a modest stipend. Potential loan deferment and AmeriCorps Education Award available for long-term and summer camp volunteers. Group opportunities are also available for 3+ people serving for one week.
Requirements: Volunteers must be 18 years of age and older; 21 or older for most long-term positions. No upper age limit. Application and criminal record search required.
Short-term volunteers can begin their service at any time. Long-term volunteers may begin their service in August or January. Please see out website for application dates.
