Interested in fair trade design? Looking for an international opportunity to utilize your business skills to support economic solidarity among Peruvian women? Volunteer with Awamaki and change lives in the heat of the Andes!

As a Fair Trade Sales volunteer, you can expect to:

  • Create sales materials for local, international, and trunk-show use including line sheets, emails, and print materials.
  • Design materials for the Awamaki store such as store displays/windows, brochures, and promotional signs.
  • Assist the Woman's Cooperator Coordinator reach out to potential clients regarding opportunities for promoting Awamaki's mission and fair trade products.
  • Conduct market research to achieve greater exposure for our products and the social impact of purchasing our fair trade products.
  • Document the design process by blogging and tweeting about the experiences to engage viewers in the storytelling of how artisans and visiting designers share ideas and create goods.
  • Provide assistance with accounting, managing inventory, purchasing materials, and monitoring quality assurance.
  • Work a minimum of 6 – 9 hours per week at Awamaki's fair trade store in Ollantaytambo.

Located in the quaint town of Ollantaytambo, Cusco, Peru, Awamaki is a Peruvian and U.S. 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that promotes community development through fair trade artisan cooperatives, sustainable tourism operations, and local community education. In particular, we believe that empowering the local women through successful market participation, as both consumers and producers, is linked to economic opportunities, growth, and improved well-being that result in lasting social transformations.

Volunteer Program Costs

The current Awamaki volunteer fee for 3-month and 6-month volunteers is a one-time payment made prior to arrival of $1,392. Because Awamaki is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in the United States, the majority -- $820 --is considered a donation and is tax-deductible in the United States to the extent allowed by law. As recognition of the value and importance of long-term volunteers, $700 is refunded upon completion of 6 months as an Awamaki volunteer.
