Description du poste bénévole

The Community Environmental Center is in need of docents to share information to students and adults about environmental sustainable by giving tours of its EcoHouse. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working with children, primarily ages 9-14, and will be interested in sustainability and environmental issues. All volunteers will be paired with an EcoHouse employee who will train them in the content of the EcoHouse and best practices for giving the full EcoHouse tour. Volunteers are requested to volunteer their time, from 9am-3pm, or from 12pm to 5pm one day a week (M-F). Weekend events are available for volunteers as well. Volunteer responsibilities are outlined below.

The EcoHouse is a mobile exhibit that teaches the importance of conservation. The ideas behind 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle' should be used everywhere in our homes—the shower, our choice of light bulbs, heating and cooling, the cleaning products we buy, and the materials we use. Inside the EcoHouse students of all ages engage in interactive exhibits and a full audio tour that teaches what conservation and efficiency mean, what we can do in our own homes to live more sustainably, and why it's important for us to do so.

The EcoHouse travels to a new location in New York City every 2-3 weeks. The exhibit is open to the public and free for all visitors.

Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Giving the full EcoHouse tour to school groups and individuals.
  • Familiarizing yourself with all EcoHouse exhibits.
  • Answering questions about the tour, sustainability, and the EcoHouse's general message of incorporating environmentalism into daily practices.
  • Facilitating the audio tour for visitors, and troubleshooting any issues that may arise.
  • Travelling to the EcoHouse location, which may change every 2-3 weeks. Punctuality is essential.
  • Opening and closing the EcoHouse, including cleaning and setting up as necessary.
  • Distributing and collecting materials.
  • Acting as a representative of the EcoHouse and the Community Environmental Center.

The ideal candidate should have the following qualifications:

  • Outgoing and comfortable speaking publically.
  • Interested in working with kids, previous experience a plus.
  • Interested in and knowledgeable about sustainability, energy conservation, and global warming issues.
  • Ability to think quickly and answer questions from students and tour visitors.
  • Self-motivated, with a demonstrated work ethic and good communication skills.
