Founded in 1982, Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake is a non-profit, nondenominational Christian housing ministry that envisions a world in which every man, woman, and child has a decent place to live. Putting faith into action, we bring people of all backgrounds- racial, ethnic, religious- together to fight regional housing poverty, one family at a time. We rehabilitate and build homes to sell at affordable prices for low-income families who complete our program.
Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake's Red Hats are a corps of skilled volunteers who lead individual, group, and team volunteers on Habitat construction sites. These dedicated men and women are highly involved in our transformational work in Baltimore neighborhoods and advance our mission of eliminating substandard housing. They make a commitment to train with a Habitat construction site supervisor, and to apply their training on at least two build days per month, assisting Site Supervisors in ensuring safety, productivity, and quality control of Habitat's volunteer construction work.
Prospective Red Hats volunteers must first volunteer on two Habitat build days, obtaining a referral from a Habitat site supervisor. Secondly, they attend a Red Hats 101 training, which consists of one 2- hour evening session and 4 full day Saturday sessions. These sessions include construction site safety, power-tool instructions, and leadership training.
