Description du poste bénévole

The Arab-American Family Support Center (AAFSC) a 501(c)(3) not-for profit, non-sectarian organization that was created in 1994 to serve the Arab immigrant community of New York City. The first and largest Arabic-speaking social service agency in New York, our mission is to empower new immigrants with the tools they need to successfully acclimate into the world around them and become active participants in their communities.

AAFSC is seeking a bi-lingual (Arabic) college graduate to provide basic financial education to survivors of domestic violence in our Brooklyn office. The financial literacy curriculum will be taught in the mornings, over the course of sixteen bi-weekly sessions (two months) to a closed group of up to fifteen women. The volunteer will receive support from program staff in our Adult Education unit and Project Manar, our anti-violence program.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participate in training with Fordham Law School's Coalition for Education Training for Trainers Program. Materials and mentor guides are provided prior to the workshop.
  • Teach financial literacy lessons to survivors of domestic violence at our Brooklyn office using the Allstate Foundation's Moving Ahead Through Financial Management Curriculum.
  • Address the client's emotional needs, and promote self esteem/motivation by engaging in participatory learning.
  • Distribute and collect attendance forms and other necessary program materials/documentation.
  • Have fun while teaching financial literacy to women!

Qualifications

  • Those having completed their junior year of college and graduate students are encouraged to apply.
  • Interest in teaching financial literacy to low-income survivors of domestic violence.
  • Sensitivity, compassion and patience in working with adult learners from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience with survivors of sexual or domestic violence a plus.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken Arabic and English.
  • Maturity with strong leadership, communication and organizational skills.
