Are you a qualified nurse/midwife or are you current doing related studies? How would you like to live on a beautiful tropical island and gain valuable experience in your field?
Sounds good, right? Trust us; it doesn't get any better!
Programme outline
The hospital on our island, Naifaru Is., is the main hospital for this atoll and caters to a population of roughly 11,000 people. Naifaru Island accounts for about half of the atoll's population, with about 5,000 registered inhabitants.
Being a relatively small hospital, you will be given a unique opportunity to work much more in-depth with the patients than you would in larger hospital as the staff-to-patient ratio is much higher in a smaller hospital.
As a volunteer in our nursing programme, you will be given extensive duties which include;
- Direct care of patients - Dressing of wounds - Hygiene - Administering medicine - Taking blood samples & cannulation
Whether you are an experienced nurse, or currently doing your studies; volunteering at our hospital is bound to give you new and interesting perspectives on your profession. You will gain experience which will be different to that of larger hospitals. This is true for the way the hospital is run as well as the fact that the tropical setting will allow you to become familiar with tropical medicine in a low-risk area.
Apart from being able to give much more in-depth care you will also be able to experience duties which fall into different departments. At the moment the hospital has the following specialists:
- Obstetricians & Gynaecologists - Anaesthetists - General Practitioners - Dentists - Paediatricians (planned)
If you join our organization of dedicated volunteers as a midwife or midwife student you will be able to work closely with antenatal care. At our hospital you are sure to find this to be a different experience from what you are used to. Working with antenatal care in our community is infused with cultural considerations which offers a unique insight into the 'real' Maldives. Our midwife volunteer will also be given the opportunity to go on home visits, giving further insight into the Maldivian culture by taking you 'behind the scenes' of local family life.
As our volunteer house is only a minute away, there is ample opportunity for you to be on call when you're off duty.
Our hospital has a fully equipped staff room, where you can sit and relax between rounds. There is air conditioning in the room so it's a nice place to relax when it gets too hot.
Requirements
All we need from you to become our next nurse or midwife volunteer is that; - You are passionate about your work - You have experience as working or studying to become a nurse/midwife - You have an open mind towards other cultures - You are driven towards helping people - You can be flexible and assist in various community-building programmes on our island - You are willing to commit yourself to helping develop our community!
What's in it for you?
Apart from gaining a unique experience by getting to work at a small hospital on a remote, tropical island in the Indian Ocean, you will be able to use your spare time to get to experience the true Maldives, outside of the resorts that most foreigners see.
As a volunteer with Atoll Volunteers, you will always be engaged with a number of activities. For instance there are frequent trips to neighbouring uninhabited islands, where you can bask in the sun on seemingly endless white beaches, you can go snorkelling off the reef or fish with other volunteers and locals and much, much more!
In Naifaru, you need only take a walk through town to feel the special atmosphere unique to Maldivian islands. Loose yourself in the intricate side alleys bustling with people, enjoy the crowd at the fish market or join the locals in a break from the sun by enjoying an ice coffee in the shade.
Getting to Naifaru is as easy as booking a flight, but you will find that leaving is nowhere near as easy: Once you are here you will not want to leave!
