In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr., volunteers of all ages join together for an afternoon of service to Cambridge residents in need.
This year will be Cambridge's third Many Helping Hands / Cambridge MLK Day of Service. This city-wide day of service will take place on January 21, 2013 in Central Square, Cambridge from 2 to 5 pm at Cambridge City Hall and the Cambridge Senior Center.
Last year more than 800 volunteers came together in Central Square to make a difference in the lives of others. Check out the short video made by CCTV at http://cctvcambridge.org/node/89646 about the 2012 MLK Day of Service.
The volunteers spanned in age from 2 to 92 years old. They came from different backgrounds, different neighborhoods, different faiths, different ethnicities. They came to work together following Dr. Martin Luther King's exhortation: "Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve." The fruits of their labors benefited thousands people in need all over Cambridge helped by 54 different organizations and city departments.
This year we hope for more than 1000 participants. We will be back in Central Square. We will be doing tha same projects: making blankets and scarves for homeless children, teens and adults, making bookmarks for adults and children in literacy programs, making activity kits for children waiting in hospital emergency rooms, making Valentines Day cards for elders in the community, collecting and sorting cans of food, winter clothing and childrens' books.
We hope to make a difference in even more lives.
We hope you will join us.
Many needs. Many people. Many helping hands.
