SOCIAL WORKERS, THERAPISTS, ACUPUNCTURISTS, BODY WORKERS, ART THERAPISTS, AND OTHER WELLNESS PROFESSIONALS WANTED
The lives of many Coney Island residents have been turned upside-down by Hurricane Sandy. Thousands of people have seen their homes, small businesses, and personal possessions destroyed by flooding. Others found themselves stranded for weeks without electricity, heat, running water, or access to the outside world. Many have been struggling to acquire basic supplies, and feel angered by the lack of resources available to them during a time of crisis. Although several relief agencies are currently engaged in the difficult process of rebuilding, few have addressed the serious psychological and emotional needs that have arisen as a result of the storm.
People's Relief is working to create a Wellness Station staffed with volunteer therapists, social workers, acupuncturists, body workers, herbalists, and other wellness professionals who are interested in working with us in Coney Island. We also hope to work with tenant organizations and local leaders to host Wellness Days in the community rooms or lobbies of residential buildings to make these resources more immediately accessible to residents.
If you are interested in working with People's Relief to volunteer with and/or to develop ideas for the Wellness Station, please be in touch! We are hoping to collaborate with independent practitioners and with schools, organizations, and other networks that would be able to provide services on a consistent basis – perhaps one day a week (either a half or full day). Although we are currently seeking funding to support this initiative, at present we are unable to provide compensation to practitioners, so we are grateful for any individuals or programs that might be interested in donating their time.
