About Lifestart Foundation
The Lifestart Foundation is a grassroots, not-for-profit charity that helps disadvantaged Vietnamese people and their families to become self-sufficient. Founded in 2000 by Australian Karen Leonard and supported by a team of dedicated volunteers, the Foundation applies a holistic approach to helping those in need through proven working programs and initiatives which are designed to effect a generational change.
The team works to create sustainable and ongoing income streams for the disadvantaged via education and vocational training schemes. Those with complex disabilities are given improved opportunities through the Lifestart Foundation Workshop and the Lifestart Foundation Free Disability Community Centre.
About the Disability Community Centre
The Lifestart Foundation Free Disability Community Centre provides people living with disabilities in central Vietnam with new and improved opportunities. The Centre works directly with adults whose complex disabilities are a result of issues such as polio, war injuries, cerebral palsy and accidents. The Centre offers expert professional one-on-one assessments and depending on the patient's special requirements they will receive a supervised rehabilitation exercise plan, information on nutrition, posture and details of locally based services. In addition, referral to a local hospital for surgery or prosthetics is provided for those who require specialist medical treatment. Learn More >
Background to what has commenced and where LSF is hoping to head with this work
The Free Disability Community Centre officially opened in September this year. A volunteer physiotherapist from Australia and another from New Zealand have been working there since it opened. They have developed procedures and processes to be used when dealing with the disabled Vietnamese people who attend the centre. They have developed links with other centres dealing with people with disabilities and have commenced some outreach work at a Homeless Shelter for Disabled people in Hoi An and the Danang Red Cross Centre.
A volunteer Occupational Therapist commenced work with us in May for 3 months.
Both Physiotherapists have finished their time with us. We are urgently seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified professionals who would like to discuss the position and the volunteer opportunities available.
